Local health authorities in Veneto have reported a case of West Nile virus infection that was not contracted abroad. The 55-year-old patient is being treated at home. Despite not having traveled internationally, the patient contracted the virus, leading Francesco Benazzi, the general director of USL 2, to declare the disease as becoming endemic. Fumigation has been carried out in a 200-meter radius around the patient’s home, and family unit tests have been negative. Amidst this, Veneto’s president, Luca Zaia, has called on municipal administrations to adopt proper prophylactic actions to protect public health. Meanwhile, mosquito infestations carrying the virus have been detected in the provinces of Rovigo, Venice, and Padua.
