On 22 July 2024, Split Airport was the target of a cyber attack that crashed the entire system, causing flight cancellations and delays and diverting many planes to nearby airports.
The airport management confirmed the information attack directly to explain the disruptions. Airport service workers had to check in manually for the first part of the flights, forcing passengers to redo their check-ins at transit points such as Frankfurt Airport.
Split Airport uses its IT system rather than that of the airlines to simplify summer operations. While this organizational method is well received by the airport administration, the cyber attack showed its limits and caused additional costs for the diversion and management of passengers. Furthermore, it called into question the IT protection system and caused damage to the airport’s reputation at the start of the summer season.
Even though the relevant minister has stated that these incidents happen all over the world, this does not mean that preventive measures should not be strengthened to mitigate future cyber attacks.
