The latest Epidemiological Bulletin from the Italian Ministry of Health reveals a significant increase in the number of infections and deaths associated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the disease known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). In the seven days between 11 and 17 July, 8,942 new cases were recorded in Italy, representing a 62% rise compared to the previous week when 5,503 cases were reported. The number of weekly deaths also increased, from 33 to 40. The regions currently most affected are Lombardy, with 1,761 cases, followed by Lazio, with 1,627 cases, and Campania, with 1,483 cases. The national positivity rate stands at 11.2%, based on 79,967 tests conducted, marking a four-percentage-point rise from the previous week’s rate of 7.2%.
