The Bioemergence Unit of ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco, headed by Maria Rita Gismondo, has successfully identified the first two cases of Oropouche virus infection in Lombardy. The unit has developed a diagnostic test for the infection. The cases are associated with individuals who have returned from Brazil and Cuba. The primary vector, the Culicoides paraensis mosquito, is endemic to South and Central America and has not yet been detected in Europe. Currently, there is no evidence indicating that the Oropouche virus can be transmitted between humans. Experts agree that the most effective methods to reduce the risks of arboviral diseases, exacerbated by climate change and population shifts, are rapid diagnosis and ongoing monitoring, along with public health interventions like disinfection.
