What happened

The recent report from the National Epidemiological Surveillance for Measles and Rubella highlights that from January to June, Italy recorded 717 measles cases, averaging 24.3 cases per million inhabitants. In June alone, there were 151 cases, a slight increase from May’s 131 cases. The Abruzzo Region recorded the highest incidence of Measles cases, with 64.6 cases per million people. According to the report, 89.5% of these cases were unvaccinated, and an additional 5.5% were not fully vaccinated. The highest incidence was observed in children under 5 years old, with 34 cases reported in children under one year of age. Additionally, 32.8% of cases developed at least one complication, primarily pneumonia (91 cases) and, rarely, encephalitis (1 case).
