Elevated concentrations of Ostreopsis Ovata, also known as toxic algae, have been detected along certain Italian coasts. Originating from tropical marine environments and preferring calm, warm waters, its introduction into the Mediterranean may have been unintentional, likely through ship ballast waters. Inspections by ARPA Puglia have revealed high levels of this algae, especially in the waters of Torre Canne, within the municipality of Fasano (Brindisi), and the provinces of Bari and Bisceglie (Barletta-Andria-Trani). Consequently, local health authorities recommend avoiding swimming and staying on beaches where algae is present, as the concentrations found pose a significant risk to individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
