What happened

On June 26, 2024, Italy reported its first indigenous case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in a human, presenting in the neuroinvasive form, in the province of Modena. Previously, on April 6, 2024, a confirmed case of fever imported from Oman was reported in Lombardy. Currently, two provinces have shown evidence of WNV circulation: Chieti, where mosquito pool positivity was confirmed on June 19, 2024, and Modena, where human positivity was confirmed on June 26, 2024. WNV circulation has still not been detected in the veterinary surveillance of horses, resident birds, or wild birds.
