What happened

An arrest warrant issued against Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad for the use of banned chemical weapons against civilians has been confirmed in a Paris court. However, Assad’s government has denied using chemical weapons against its opponents. This warrant refers to allegations of complicity in crimes against humanity and complicity in war crimes. This follows a French investigation into the chemical attacks that occurred in Douma and the eastern Ghouta district in August 2013, in which more than 1,000 people died. The Paris Court of Appeal has issued a statement confirming the arrest warrant against President Assad, noting that international law allows for exceptions to immunity in cases where a head of state is accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide.
