What happened

On Wednesday, June 19, CDK Global (a software solutions provider for U.S. car dealerships) was hit by a cyberattack twice the same day. The attack was of the ransomware type and affected more than half of the dealerships in the United States. As a precautionary measure, CDK shut down most of its computer systems, including critical applications for retail sales, financing, and support. Although some services were restored in the afternoon, the second cyberattack caused further disruptions.

Due to CDK’s inability to estimate full system restoration, automotive companies like Kia, Toyota, and Stellantis have recommended the affected dealerships use manual processes to conduct their business operations. This cybersecurity incident at CDK highlights hackers’ interest in stealing sensitive financial data, emphasizing the importance of robust security measures for information-holding computer systems.
