Rising dengue and West Nile Virus cases in Europe linked to climate change and mosquito spread

Type of event:

Wounded

Date

June 11, 2024

What happened

EU/EEA statistics show increased imported dengue and local dengue outbreaks and West Nile virus outbreaks. Climate change promotes the spread of invasive mosquitoes, increasing the risk of infection. In 2023, 130 local dengue cases and over 4,900 imported cases were reported, the highest number since 2008. For the West Nile virus, in 2023 there were 713 local cases in 123 regions of nine countries, with 67 deaths. The mosquitoes Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are expanding their presence in Europe. Vector control, early detection, and sensitization are key to preventing mosquito-borne diseases. Simple measures such as removing standing water and using protective clothing are essential.
