What happened

According to the WHO “Weekly Bulletin on Outbreaks and other Emergencies” (Week 21: 20 – 26 May 2024), Angolan health authorities announced that Polio virus had been detected in Chitato Municipality, Lunda Norte province, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo. A person infected with “circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2” (cVDPV2) was confirmed. This is the only case reported this year in the country as of 15 May 2024, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative stated.
