What happened

The Netherlands announced that their F-35 fighters are fully operational for nuclear attack, replacing the F-16 from 1 June. The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) completed the transition after receiving certification to carry the thermonuclear bomb B61-12. This development strengthens NATO’s nuclear deterrent position in Europe, in a context of continuing tensions. The F-35, equipped with stealth capabilities, represents a significant technological advance compared to the F-16 and Panavia Tornado. Belgium, Germany, and Italy will adopt the F-35 for nuclear missions. The RNLAF highlighted the long process of testing and certification of F-35 and their progressive integration into conventional and nuclear activities.
