A survey conducted by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) showed that 47% of respondents are unaware of plant toxic substances, thus showing a lack of knowledge regarding natural toxins contained in many foods. These are often chemical substances used by plants to ward off predators such as insects or microorganisms. These substances are found in products such as beans and potatoes and can pose health risks. However, many natural toxins are made harmless by simply heating the food.
