On May 22 the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) announced the first successful evaluation launch of the new ASMPA_R medium-range air-to-surface strategic missile from a Rafale fighter jet. This test is an important milestone in the upgrade of the ASMP (air-sol moyenne portée), a French nuclear air-launched cruise missile introduced in 1986 that was already upgraded in 2010 with the ASMP-A, and underscores the commitment of the country to maintaining and advancing national defense technologies. The new ASMPA-R project aims to extend the missile range and payload, enabling it to carry a new 300 kt thermonuclear warhead.
As a nuclear-armed state, France maintains a strong nuclear deterrent known as the “Force de Frappe” to ensure national security, and the ASMPA is the main air-launched cruise missile system used to enforce this deterrence. Integrating the ASMP-A with the Rafale fighter jet ensures France maintains a robust and credible nuclear deterrent to deter potential adversaries through assured retaliation.
