The Circular “Prevention and control of influenza: Recommendations for the season 2024-2025” was published on 20 May 2024. In Italy, the Ministry of Health formulates the annual recommendations for influenza vaccine usage after consulting with the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG), the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), and the Regions/PA. The process encompasses evaluating numerous elements, such as the epidemiological pattern of influenza, the demographics targeted for vaccination, the safety, immunogenicity, and effectiveness of the influenza vaccines, along with other relevant factors.
The most effective flu prevention strategy is vaccination. The influenza virus is an acute respiratory illness that can present in varying degrees of severity. Individuals who are at increased risk of severe complications or exacerbation of their existing conditions, including the elderly, individuals with concurrent diseases, residents in healthcare and other long-term care facilities, and pregnant women should be advised of the importance of influenza vaccination, to reduce their risk of infection and complications.
