What happened

A joint security team conducted an operation, with the result of recovering at least four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the Kwata area of Komamboga parish, Kawempe division, within the city of Kampala. The recovered items also included mobile phones and magazines associated with a nine-millimeter gun, as confirmed by the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) spokesperson. Official sources reported that the objects were enclosed in metal casings and connected in series. Mobile phones recovered along with the devices were intended to receive commands from people holding the remote control. Once activated, the explosives would explode in sequence. The success of IED interception has been attributed to both intelligence gathering and public vigilance, which allowed personnel to respond to the situation before explosives exploded rapidly. The perpetrators, believed to be affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), escaped capture.
