Date

What happened

Public authorities declared an alert for environmental contamination in the city of Tegucigalpa. The contamination occurred due to a dense layer of smoke in the air. The institution specified that this layer of smoke is primarily attributed to the burning or preparation of agricultural plots, the pollution from exhaust gases emitted by vehicles, and the release of gases from industrial sources. The health authorities have highlighted the presence of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone, as well as nitrogen, generated by the transport sector, which they consider to be highly harmful to the health of the population. As a result, the population is exposed to elevated levels of environmental pollutants and high temperatures. For safety reasons, many work activities have been stopped.
