The Cigar Lake mine is one of the richest in uranium in the world. The McClean Lake facility, which handles the processing, is operated by a subsidiary of the French company Orano and sells approximately 40% of its output to the French multinational electrical services company EDF. The product emerging from the plant is a concentrated form of uranium oxide. This substance is processed at elevated temperatures and converted into tiny black crystals. The importance of this aspect leads the “Canadian solution” to be used as a primary source of fuel in nuclear power plant reactors, especially in light of the current processes of decarbonisation of the Western economy.
