According to the Africa CDC’s Weekly Event-Based Surveillance Report, the Ministry of Health (MoH) reported 265 new cases of measles (84 confirmed; 181 suspected) in 12 districts, representing a 20% decrease in the number of new cases compared to the last update. No deaths from the disease were recorded. A total of 1,973 cases of measles (259 confirmed, 1,714 suspected) were reported, and 4 deaths (CFR: 0,2%) from 47 of 63 districts in Mauritania this year. Children under the age of five were predominantly affected, with an incidence rate of 29.6 cases per 100,000 population. This is a protracted outbreak that commenced in December 2022.
A total of 65% of children between the ages of 9 months and 59 months had not received vaccination against the measles virus. In the previous year, 2021, the national coverage rate for measles vaccination among children aged less than five years in Mauritania was 89%.
