What happened

The Africa CDC’s Weekly Event Based Surveillance Report – Africa CDC Epidemic Intelligence Report (28 April 2024) indicates that the Zambia National Public Health Institute has reported 168 new suspected cases and eight new deaths (CFR: 4.8%) of cholera from five districts. This represents a 5% decrease in the number of new cases compared to the previous update. A total of 19,793 cases (851 confirmed; 18,942 suspected) and 611 deaths (CFR: 3%) of cholera have been reported from 70 of 116 districts in Zambia this year. A total of 33% of the cases reported were in children under the age of 15. This is a protracted outbreak that began in October 2023.
