What happened

The increase in measles and whooping cough cases is concerning several EU/SEE member states. Over 5,770 measles cases have been reported, along with a significant rise in whooping cough cases, from March 2023 to February 2024. Infants under one year are particularly at risk as they are too young to be vaccinated. Maintaining high vaccination coverage is essential to halt transmission. An increase in whooping cough cases, especially among infants and young children, has been observed. Ensuring timely administration of all recommended vaccines is critical. Within this context, the European Immunization Week (EIW) underscores the importance of vaccination for public health. The ECDC is committed to enhancing vaccination programs and ensuring fair and timely access for all.
