What happened

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) investigated an outbreak of dangerous drug-resistant (XDR) Salmonella infections in six Canadian provinces. The investigation identified two sources: Exposure to raw meat prepared for pets and contact with cattle, like calves. There were 44 laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella drug-resistant in six provinces: Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Between July 2020 and January 2024 thirteen individuals (ranging in age from 0 to 91 age) were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
