Work has started at the Kalinin nuclear power plant’s first unit for a significant upgrade of the structure. The first unit used to share a simulator with the second unit, but a modernisation programme means it now needs its training facility. The upgrade should be completed by the end of 2025, and the nuclear power plant, which is in the Tver region northwest of Moscow, will have four separate full-scale simulators (one for each of its four VVER-1000 reactors). The plant has received a 10-year licence extension in 2014 and aims to remain in service until 2044.
