What happened

The lower part of the dome of the internal containment (VZO), weighing 375.5 tonnes, has been successfully installed at unit 8 of China’s Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) by Rosatom. This critical structure was assembled separately on the ground before installation. The next steps involve installing and concreting the hermetic shell of the reactor building and beginning the installation of main equipment such as the reactor vessel, steam generators, and main circulation pipeline. After welding the lower and upper tiers together, specialists will assemble and install the upper part of the dome. Once the dome is installed, concrete work will continue inside the containment to enhance radiation protection. The plant’s double containment system, which includes both internal and external containment structures (NZO), ensures maximum safety by preventing radioactive material leakage and protecting against external threats such as earthquakes, tsunamis, or hurricanes.
