On 29 January 2024, Spanish Health Authorities notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of a confirmed human case of infection with influenza A(H1N1) virus of swine origin, in the province of Lleida (autonomous community of Catalonia). Including the current case, three cases of human infection with influenza A(H1N1)variant viruses have been reported in Spain. The first case was reported in 2008 and the second case was reported in January 2023.
Under the International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005, an infection in humans caused by a new influenza A virus subtype is considered an event with potential impact for significant public health. Presently, based on available data, there is no identified ongoing community transmission in this instance. Consequently, the risk of international spread of the disease via human-to-human or community-level transmission is considered low.
